4. Calvin T. Work was born on June 7, 1868 in Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. He died on February 23, 1953. He was a millworker in Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio. He was married to Clara Hanna on June 26, 1890.
5. Clara Hanna was born on December 23, 1871. She died on March 11, 1953. Calvin T. Work and Clara Hanna had the following children:

8. Phineas Alexander Work was born on December 30, 1837. He died on May 29, 1909. He served in the military 12 Aug 1862 till May 1863 in Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was a farmer near Rochester Mills, Pennsylvania. He was married to Sarah A. Blose on July 4, 1867.
9. Sarah A. Blose was born on September 27, 1847 in Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. She died on March 25, 1915. Granddaughter of Michael Blose and Sara Waugaman. Phineas Alexander Work and Sarah A. Blose had the following children:

6-1898 (Spanish American War). He was sent to Manila and then to China.
He was buried in Mahoning United Presbyterian Cemetery, Mahoning,
Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

FIFTH GENERATION
16.Alexander Scroggs Work was born on December 7, 1797 in Big Spring, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He died on October 23, 1878. He was a farmer. Alexander Scroggs Work was four years old when his father moved to Ligonier Valley. Until he was 26, he lived with his parents, helping to clear and improve the farm. After his marriage he settled on a farm later owned by Robert H. Work. Seven years later he purchased a farm 11/2 miles farther down the creek and moved his family there, where he spent the remainder of his life. He and his four brothers lived on adjoining farms, and he was a very successful farmer. He was an Elder in the Seceder Church until it united with the Union Seceders forming the U.P. Church. He was married to Margaret Brown.
17.Margaret Brown was born on February 23, 1808. She died on January 1, 1848. Alexander Scroggs Work and Margaret Brown had the following children:

He was married to Miriam Scroggs on April 23, 1792 in Carlisle Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

- Rachel Ireland Work was born on October 6, 1793 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. She died on April 8, 1878. She was Presbyterian.
- James Work was born on March 2, 1795 near Big Spring, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He died on August 14, 1860. He resided in Ewing Farm. James Work moved with his parents in 1798 or 1799 to Westmoreland County, near Squirrel Hill, Ligonier Valley; then came with his parents on pack horses to Indiana County in 1804, and settled on the old Work Farm where the other children were born and Elijah Ireland Work died.
- Lettice Work was born on July 7, 1796 in Big Spring, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. She died on August 23, 1871. An avid spinner, the girls in the neighborhood would go from house to house preparing thread to weave to fabric for their clothes. She was a woman of high Christian attainments. The stranger was never turned away hungry from her door, many times they were given home for a winter season. She and her spouse took great interest in helping the fugitive slaves. She would set up refreashments at midnight and often have her sons William or Thomas go with the slaves on the underground railroad to the next station.She was a loving woman who took in four orphans.
- (16)-- Alexander Scroggs Work.
- John Work was born on June 24, 1799 in Big Spring, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He died on March 6, 1872. He was described as 6 feet four inches in height. John was two years old when his family moved to Ligonier Valley and three years later to what is now Indiana County. He lived with his family until 1825 when he married. John Work purchased a farm and built a home at the fording of the Little Mahoning Creek one mile below the present site of Rochester Mills. He was one of the five brothers who settled on adjoining farms. He was a devoutly religious man, many of his family sleep in the Mahoning Church Cemetery.
- William Work was born on December 10, 1800 in Ligonier Valley, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He died on November 7, 1878. Young William after his marriage, owned a farm along Little Mahoning Creek near Richmond and spent the rest of his days there successfully farming and stock raising.
- Allen Newton Work was born on June 6, 1802 near New Florence, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He died on January 30, 1852. Allen was one of the educators of early times, teaching school several terms. He bought a farm in East Mahoning about 1832 from Richard Wolverton and taught in the winter. He was Justice of the Peace for a number of years and served a term in the Legislature in 1840-1841.
- Sarah S. Work was born on April 17, 1805 in East Mahoning, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. She Cause of Death facial cancer between 1874 and 1887. She died on April 1, 1887. She was a weaver, spinner, and farmer after husbands death.
- Aaron Work was born on October 26, 1806 in East Mahoning, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He died on July 21, 1892. He was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery. Aaron Work married and moved to the Dilts mill which he operated for two or three years. He then moved to a farm later owned by R. H. Work, Sr. where he built a log house, replacing it with a frame one about 1840. In November of 1865 he moved to the farm at the mouth of Broadhead Run, where he resided until his death. He was a lover of music and taught singing at school in Jefferson and northern Indiana counties, teaching in Punxsutawney when it contained only six houses. He was a carpenter by trade, being the principal builder in the north end of the county for years. He was a zealous worker in the church.
- Mary Work was born on October 12, 1808. She died on December 27, 1853. From the Work Family History (1894)- "Mary Work spent her life on the old homestead living with her brother, Elijah. She assisted many of her family in their work and lives, going when and where duty called, although never very strong. She had a quiet, pleasant manner which attracted many to her. Like all this family, she lived a true christian life, and while not a long one, yet her life was not measured by years. It was, by many deeds, a long life."
- Miriam Work was born on July 25, 1810 in East Mahoning, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. She died on August 11, 1850. She was buried in Mahoning United Presbyterian Cemetery, Mahoning, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. She was Presbyterian in Mahoning United Presbyterian Church, Mahoning, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
- Moses Thompson Work was born on December 5, 1812 in Mahoning Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He died on March 2, 1886. Moses lost his father at the age of sixteen, and the care of the farm fell principally on his shoulders, the older brothers having married and gone to homes of their own. At the age of 21, he married and three years later built himself a log cabin and log barn on the farm where he remained till his death. He was County Commisioner from 1854 till 1857. Moses was especially gifted in music, teaching, singing and other talents. He was well off financially real property worth $10,000 and $3,000 cash.
- Susan E. Work was born on September 30, 1815 in East Mahoning, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. She died on February 24, 1844. She was buried in East Mahoning Cemetery, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
- Elijah Ireland Work was born on November 23, 1818 in East Mahoning, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He died on June 25, 1892.

He was married to Letitia Scott in Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania.
65. Letitia Scott was born in 1732. She was Presbyterian in 1785 in Big Springs Presbyterian Church, Newville, Pennsylvania. She resided in 1785 in Newton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. She died in 1790. James Work and Letitia Scott had the following children:

- John Work was born about 1758 in Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania. He served in the military in September 1777 in Captain Robert Shannon's Company, First Battalion Cumberland County Militia. He died in February 1809. He had accompanied John Brady to see him across the creek, below Richmond, and, as was the custom, took his gun and dog along. He failed to return and was found by the barking of his faithful dog, dead in the woods by his home. He was an one of the first Justices of the Peace in Mahoning Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He was Presbyterian in Gilgal United Presbyterian Church, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He was one of the first Elders. Migrated with his brother, William, from Cumberland County to Westmoreland County, and a few years later into East Mahoning Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

- Alexander Work was born about 1765 in Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania. He was a carpenter in Lackawanna Township, Pennsylvania (near Mifflintown).
- James Work was born on December 31, 1768 in Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania. He resided ` in 1803 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He resided in 1836 in Marshall County, Illinois. He died on November 26, 1842 in Marshall County, Illinois.
- Susanna Work was born about 1770 in Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania.
- Letitia Work was born about 1775 in Cumberland Valley, Pennsylvania.

66.Alexander Scroggs was born about 1720 in Midlothian, Scotland. He died before April 5, 1796 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Alexander was one of the very early settlers of the Cumberland Valley and both he and his brother Allen were early heads of families associated with the formation of what is now the First United Presbyterian Church of Newville, and Alexander's farm was adjacent to that of John Thompson, near the Green Spring (see the description of John Thompson's property under his name).
Alexander was a sergeant during the Revolution and was a member of Lt. Samuel Crawford's Company, performing his militia service on the frontier.
He was married to Rachel Ireland in 1772 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

128.Alexander Work was born about 1702 in Bart Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He signed a will on March 17, 1748 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Proved 1749. Stepdaughter is named in the will giving rise to different maiden name for wife. Son Alexander was unnamed and unbaptized at the time of his will. He died on March 17, 1749 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He resided Lived and died in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Graveyard of Middle Octoraro Church. He was married to Miriam McNute (or McNutt).

NINTH GENERATION
256.Henry Work was born about 1680. He died about 1738 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He held a warrant for 200 acres in Bart Township, Middle Octoraro Church in Bart Township (organized in 1720) built on a tract conveyed to Henry Work et al by the Penns on 29 June 1738. It is still (1969) in possesion of the Presbyterian Congregation except for 6 acres sold to the United Presbyterian congregation which stands their church and parsonage. Close by is the graveyard where some of the original settlers are buried. Henry Work had the following children:

- William Work died in July 1766. He signed a will on July 14, 1766. Will was proved 29 July 1766. He was a Cloathier until 1766 in London Britian Township and of Chester County, Pennsylvania.
- Rebecca Work.
- Martha Work died in 1748 or 1754. She was born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
- Joseph Work owned 500 acres in 1738 in along the Big Chickie, probably Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He died before February 28, 1743. He resided in Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He signed a will. The oldest child (Joseph) received 2/7 of the estate and later sold it to his mother. Abraham's 1/7 was sold to Samuel Scott. Patrick sold his to his two brothers, James and William. William in turn sold to James. The land had been patented by the father in 1738.

- Andrew Work was born about 1705 in Bart Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was a Sheriff in 1749/50 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He served in the military in 1756 in Captain, Associated Companies of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was a Justice of the Peace in 1764 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He died between 1775 and 1779 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

512.(Possibly John of Wark) Work, (or Wark) was born in County Antrim, Scotland. (Possibly John of Wark) Work (or Wark) had the following children:
